The Paul Gauguin was built specifically to sail the waters of Tahiti, French Polynesia and the South Pacific. Launched in 1998, the Gauguin — named for French Post-Impressionist artist Eugène Henri Paul Gauguin, famed for his masterworks set in French Polynesia — is the longest continually operating year-round luxury cruise ship in the South Pacific. No other luxury ship in history has offered this level of single-destination focus and expertise on a year-round basis for such an extended period of time.

Note: The line sold its smaller Tere Moana ship in 2015. In September 2019 luxury expedition cruise company Ponant acquired Paul Gauguin Cruises while retaining the Paul Gauguin brand.
